Eye patches before makeup

The most common complaint about eye makeup isn't colour or coverage. It's that concealer looks fine for an hour and then settles into every line you own. A patch can genuinely help with that, and it can also make it worse. The difference is about four minutes.

Why concealer creases

• Too much product. Under-eye skin needs a fraction of what people apply.
• A surface that's still wet or slippery, so the makeup can move.
• Dry, textured skin that grabs pigment unevenly and then flakes.
• Constant movement. You blink all day; nothing under the eye stays perfectly still.

A patch addresses the third one, which is why it helps at all: smoother, better-hydrated skin gives concealer an even surface to sit on. It creates the second one if you rush.

The wait window

Take the patch off, tap the remaining gel in with a fingertip until it's genuinely absorbed rather than just spread, then wait three to five minutes before anything else goes on. The skin should feel comfortable and matte-ish to the touch, not tacky. If it's still tacky, you're early.

The order that works

1. Cleanse, or just rinse if it's morning.
2. Patch on for fifteen minutes. Get dressed, make coffee.
3. Remove and tap in the residue.
4. Wait three to five minutes.
5. Eye cream or moisturiser only if your skin still feels tight — otherwise skip it, this is a common cause of sliding.
6. Primer if you use one, then the thinnest possible layer of concealer, tapped rather than dragged.
7. Set very lightly with powder. Under-eye skin needs a whisper, not a coat.

One honest note on before-and-afters

We don't publish retouched comparison photos, and we'd be sceptical of anyone who does under this kind of lighting. What we'll tell you from our own wear tests is directional and modest: makeup sat flatter for longer when the skin underneath was hydrated and fully dry before application. That's the whole claim.
