Under-eye care

The four kinds of dark circles

The reason no product 'fixes dark circles' is that dark circles are four different things sharing one name.

Natural light across the under-eye area showing skin texture and shadow

One: pigment

Actual brown colour in the skin itself. It's more common in medium and deep skin tones and it's often genetic. The test: stretch the skin gently toward your cheekbone in a mirror. If the darkness moves with the skin, it's pigment. Skincare can help modestly over a long time, but deep pigment is genuinely stubborn and mostly a conversation for a dermatologist.

Two: vascular

Blue, purple or reddish tones from blood vessels showing through very thin skin. Stretch the skin and the colour usually stays put or darkens slightly. This type is influenced by sleep, allergies and circulation — which is why it looks worse after a bad night and better after a good one. Hydration and cooling change how it reads: plumper, calmer skin shows vessels less clearly.

Three: structural shadow

This one isn't colour at all — it's geometry. A tear-trough hollow catches shadow, and the shadow reads as darkness. The test is to face a window directly and then tilt your head up toward overhead light. If the 'circles' vanish when the light flattens, they were never pigment. No topical product changes bone structure. Good skincare still matters here because smoother, better-hydrated skin reflects light more evenly, which softens the edge of the shadow.

Four: texture

Crepey, dehydrated, fine-lined skin scatters light and looks dull and greyish even when there's no pigment and no hollow. This is the type skincare reaches most directly: a hydrating, occlusive patch visibly improves it within fifteen minutes, because the change is at the surface.

So what can a patch do?

  • Pigment: almost nothing, honestly.
  • Vascular: softens how it reads for a few hours, via hydration and cooling.
  • Structural: softens the edge of the shadow by evening out the surface.
  • Texture: the clearest, most immediate win.

If your circles are sudden, new, one-sided, or come with itching or swelling, that's not a skincare question — see a clinician first.

frequently asked

Are dark circles genetic?
Often, yes — pigment-type and structural circles especially run in families. Vascular and texture-driven circles respond more to sleep, allergies and hydration.
Can any cream or patch remove dark circles?
No topical removes pigment or changes bone structure. What skincare can do is hydrate and smooth the surface, which softens how vascular and texture-driven circles read.
Why do my dark circles look worse some days?
Because part of what you're seeing is fluid, circulation and light, not fixed colour. That's the part a morning routine can influence.
