Removing eye makeup gently

The clean-skin step should not leave your eyes feeling scrubbed. Start with a remover intended for eye makeup.

Clean skin is the first instruction for our masks. That does not mean rubbing at leftover mascara with a towel or using a facial exfoliant to remove eyeliner. Eye-area skincare starts with removing makeup using a product intended for that job, following its instructions and keeping it out of the eye itself.

Read the remover's label first

A cleanser that works on the cheeks may not be suitable for eye makeup. Check the permitted area of use, any contact-lens directions and whether the remover needs rinsing. For waterproof products, use a compatible remover rather than repeatedly pulling at the lashes. The goal is less friction, not a longer list of products.

Keep hands and tools clean

FDA eye-cosmetic safety guidance recommends clean hands and clean instruments, and warns against sharing cosmetics. Apply that same care when removing makeup. Use a clean pad or cloth, avoid sharing used items and do not move a visibly dirty pad back across the other eye. Do not add water or saliva to old makeup to revive it.

Before using a patch

  1. Remove makeup according to the remover's instructions.
  2. Complete cleansing or rinsing as directed, then gently pat dry.
  3. Check that the under-eye skin feels comfortable, not sore or irritated.
  4. Only then apply a fresh pair of masks below the eyes, if you want that optional step.

An oily film can make a gel mask slide. Do not compensate by placing it higher or leaving it on longer. Begin on clean, dry skin or save the patch for another time. You also do not need a patch every time you remove makeup; moisturiser alone can be the more practical finish to an evening.

When to pause cosmetics

FDA guidance says to avoid eye cosmetics when the eye is infected or the skin around it is inflamed. Do not use an eye mask to cover discomfort from makeup or removal. Stop the irritating product and seek medical advice for symptoms that persist; pain or vision changes require prompt attention.
