Routines

Building an under-eye routine from scratch

Most under-eye routines fail because they start with six products. Start with three and add slowly.

The three-product core

  • A gentle cleanser that doesn't leave the eye area tight.
  • A moisturiser you'll actually apply twice a day. It can be the one you use on the rest of your face.
  • A daily SPF. This is the single highest-value product in any under-eye routine, by a distance.

That's a complete routine. Everything beyond it is optional, and adding the optional parts before the core is in place is why so many routines stall.

Where a patch belongs

A patch is a morning step, on clean dry skin, before everything else. It's not a replacement for moisturiser or SPF — it's a fifteen-minute hydration and cooling session that makes the rest of the morning sit better. Use it on the mornings that need it rather than forcing it into a daily slot.

Optional extras

  • A dedicated eye cream, if you like the texture or the ritual. Nice, not necessary.
  • A peptide or niacinamide serum, introduced one at a time.
  • A retinoid, at night, only once the core is boringly stable — and cautiously around the eyes.

A four-week starting plan

  1. Week 1 — Core only. Cleanser, moisturiser, SPF. Learn what your baseline actually looks like.
  2. Week 2 — Add patches on two or three mornings. Note how your concealer behaves afterwards.
  3. Week 3 — Add one optional product, in the morning, and change nothing else.
  4. Week 4 — Keep what earned its place, drop what didn't. Then leave it alone for a while.

Changing one thing at a time is the only way to know what did what. It's slower than a haul and it's the reason your routine will still make sense in six months.

Set expectations honestly

Hydration and cooling change how the area looks quickly and temporarily. Structural things — hollowing, inherited pigment, the thickness of the skin — are not routine problems, and no schedule of products will make them one. A good routine makes the temporary stuff behave and keeps the skin comfortable. That's a real result, and it's the one to aim at.

frequently asked

What do I actually need for an under-eye routine?
A gentle cleanser, a moisturiser and a daily SPF. Everything else is optional.
What order should I apply things in?
Cleanse, patch if you're using one, then serum, moisturiser and SPF — thinnest to thickest, SPF last in the morning.
How long before I should change my routine?
Give any single change a few weeks before adding another. One variable at a time is the only way to read the result.
